  1. Why is HCS moving to a 10-point grading scale?

Many K-12 schools in our state, as well as many other states, have adopted a 10-point grading scale. It will be beneficial for our students to be in line with other communities and states. Many colleges also use a 10-point grading scale which will ease the transition as our students move to the college level.

Many college admissions offices take into consideration the grading scale when they evaluate a student’s GPA. This in effect creates a common denominator to be able to compare and evaluate student performance in determining admissions. However, many outside merit-based scholarship opportunities do not factor in the grading scale. Moving to a 10-point grading scale will create a level playing field for our students and provide them with greater opportunities for merit-based scholarships.

  1. Will past grades and GPAs be converted?

No, since past grades were awarded based on the 7-point scale, the grades are valid. Instruction and assessments are adjusted accordingly for the 10-point scale so no conversion is needed.

  1. How will the new 10-point scale affect instruction?

HCS is committed to quality instruction measured by authentic assessments that accurately communicate student understanding. Teachers will update and adjust rubrics in consideration of the new grading scale.

  1. Will the new grading scale change the way class rankings are determined for high school students?

No, class rankings, valedictorian, and salutatorian will be determined using the same process and as outlined by BOE Policy 08.2211. Since the instruction, assignments, and assessments appropriately match the grading scale, the process for determining class rank is still valid.

  1. Dual credit and AP courses are awarded quality points on a 5-point scale as part of a student’s GPA. Will this change with the new grading scale?

No, students will continue to receive credit on the current 5-point scale for dual credit and AP courses for any grade earned above a D.

  1. Will the new grading scale change the graduation requirements?

The graduation requirements will continue to be the same as they have been in accordance with BOE Policy 08.113 and 08.1132.

  1. How does the new grading scale impact eligibility for HCS athletics and activities?

In order for students to be eligible to participate in HCS athletics and activities, students must follow HCS eligibility rules. The new grading scale will not change any of the requirements for eligibility.

  1. If I have questions, who should I contact?

Families should contact their school counselor with questions about the new grading scale.
