The Henderson County Board of Education will hold a public hearing at 5:45 p.m. on Monday, August 21 on a proposal to set the district's tax rate for the 2023-24 year.
The recommendation seeks to set the tax rate at 67.6 cents per $100 assessed value for real estate and personal property. In the previous fiscal year that ended June 30, 2023, the tax rate was 66.7 cents.
“The proposed 2023 rate would mean the owner of a house assessed at $100,000 would mean a difference of $9 from the previous two years,” notes Cindy Cloutier, Director of Finance for the district.
The current rate has remained unchanged since the 2021-22 school year.
Once the rate is set, property owners will receive their 2023-24 tax bill in October.
Under state law, a taxing district sets its rate annually, but the new rate cannot result in its revenue increasing by more than four percent. Any increase in revenue exceeding four percent requires a petition that puts the increase up for a referendum. The proposed 1.3% increase in the 2023-24 rate would not meet the qualifications for a referendum.
The public hearing will be held at the Henderson County Schools Professional Development Center, 631 North Green Street, Henderson, KY.
