Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center will feature community leaders and speakers who will share their stories, insights, and experiences with students and staff during February’s Black History Month. The featured events and speakers include:

Additionally, the preschool center will be sharing with students the history of Thelma B. Johnson. Ms. Johnson was a retired Extension Home Economist. In 1978, she was elected to the school board and became the first Black citizen elected to public office in Henderson County. She served on the Henderson County Board of Education from 1978 to 1986 and also served as chairwoman. In 1984, she was awarded the Henderson County Chamber of Commerce's "Distinguished Citizen of the Year.” The preschool center is named in her honor.
